Faith Formation Guidelines for students attending St. Joseph School preparing for the Sacraments of 1st Reconciliation & 1st Holy Communion. Due 10/31/24.
Your fabulous journey with God is just beginning. As Catholics we prepare for everything important. Just as great athletes prepare every time they compete, Catholics prepare for the biggest moments in life. The sacraments are one of those moments, and the guidelines below will help you prepare.
1. Sunday is the Lord’s Day. It is a special time for us. On Saturday evening or on Sunday, you will prepare to go to Mass. Mass is a time for you to celebrate the presence of God in your life. God is present especially in the Eucharist that you are preparing to receive.
2. Your teachers at SJ School will be helping you to prepare for the sacraments you will be receiving this school year in addition to teaching you more about your Catholic faith. This will all happen during your Religion classes.
3.
Because the sacraments are so important, I will have a retreat for 1st Reconciliation in January and another retreat for 1st Communion in April. This is a time when I get together with other children that are receiving the sacraments and we learn together about the sacraments of 1st Reconciliation & 1st Holy Communion.
4.
I will receive my second sacrament (1st Reconciliation in January) and my third sacrament (1st Holy Communion) in May. The first sacrament you received was Baptism.
5.
Children at St. Francis of Assisi Church will have a Marian Mass at 11:30 am on 5/18/24 (students should arrive 1/2 hour prior). I will be expected to attend wearing my 1st Communion outfit. This event is especially important to me because Mary gave birth to Jesus the Son of God, who is God, so she is the Mother of God. It’s important for me and everyone to celebrate her.
6
. On Sunday, June 22, 2025, at 11:30 am at (students should arrive 1/2 hour prior) St. Francis of Assisi this year, we will celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi. All First Communicant’s are expected to attend wearing their 1st Communion clothing. Corpus Christi is especially important to me this year because I am receiving Jesus at Communion for the first time. The Feast of Corpus Christi celebrates the transubstantiation of bread and wine into the actual body and blood of Christ during Mass. I have worked hard all year preparing for Communion and so this feast day is especially important this year.
